Internal partition work is progressing and first-fix Mechanical & Electrical works are going ahead. The internal raised floors are being built. The new main entrance has been formed and the stone finishes are being built.
The final layer of the Great Hall underfloor heated oak finished floor has now been laid and awaits fuming (a method of staining whereby the stain gets deep into the timber).
The concrete floor in the basement kitchen has been broken up and levelled. A latex screed will be laid shortly and the new floor finishes laid. This will be quickly followed by the remainder of kitchen equipment being installed.
Heritage lighting work is well underway. The large old timber main entrance door, retained from the last refurbishment, has been re-hung, and the automated glass door behind it has been hung.
The lead roof has been completed and first of the windows have been installed. The low-level stone cladding is being built and the external brickwork has started being laid.
The temperature needs to be 5 degrees and rising for many trades, including concrete work, brick and block laying etc. Local heating has been used to raise the temperature as necessary in smaller areas.
internally work continues on forming the advocacy training rooms and lecture theatre. The secondary steelwork has been erected around the East Terrace roof lights. To this will be fixed the natural stone cladding, which will form seating on the terrace.
a levelling screed has been laid prior to the final timber flooring going down. The boards themselves are being placed in the Great Hall to settle dimensionally into the temperature and Relative Humidity of the Hall. They will shortly be laid as a “floating floor”.
Those parts of the spiral staircase needing to be removed in the North West tower have been removed. The steps will be replaced having been “spun round” by a number of degrees to allow new internal access across the yet to be built glass bridge. In the library, work has started on laying blockwork, and the lead roof covering is being applied .
Gatehouse Court will remain closed to all vehicular traffic until autumn 2018. Access from the rest of the Inn to the area, and between Chancery Lane and chambers will be maintained.
The space available would not have allowed a gantry design that would fully meet health and safety standards required by the Inn. Access will therefore remain at ground level as it has been since the start of work, with the gate system and builder's banksman to ensure that it is safe for pedestrians to cross. There will be times when the gates are shut when site traffic is passing, but these will be kept to the shortest possible waiting time.
From the Trinity 2016 dining term onwards all dining term dinners and lectures will take place in the Old Hall for the duration of the development works.
This also means new arrangements are in place - please familiarise yourself with the details here
