Library extension: The reinforced concrete frame is completed, as is the steel roof structure and steel framework for the facing brickwork. For the first time it is possible to visualise the space created for Library/Archive storage and for the offices over.
East Terrace: All major excavation has long been completed, and all major concrete pours have been carried out.
The result is that the look and feel of the Education suite is apparent, albeit in shell form, and the focus of work in this area will progressively move towards internal work.
Great Hall: The important levelling of the floor, through machining off high areas of existing screed, and infilling of low areas, to leave a level floor for the kitchen equipment has been completed.
The ceiling void has a high density of M&E (Mechanical & Electrical) services nearing completion. In the service yard, the new sub-station is nearing completion, and new services are to be laid. The MCR terrace has been taken up in preparation of laying the new waterproof layer, after which the York stone pavings will be replaced.
Library extension: Work on adapting the staircase in the north‑west turret continued in preparation for the new glass walkways into the Library Extension.
East Terrace: Work on the new main entrance and South Terrace openings is nearing completion. By definition this work is noisy and acoustic blankets will be put in place to minimise noise nuisance. Concrete pours continued for walls in the East Terrace basement, including the main feature wall in the lecture theatre. Waterproofing and Delta drainage installation took place in the East Terrace basement
Great Hall: The penultimate layer of latex for the basement flooring in the Great Hall has been completed.. The final floor covering will be applied next month. The basement walls are now available for the wall covering installation to begin.. Electrical services installation has continued in all levels in the Great Hall, and will continue over the next few weeks.
Gatehouse Court will remain closed to all vehicular traffic until summer 2018. Access from the rest of the Inn to the area, and between Chancery Lane and chambers will be maintained.
The space available would not have allowed a gantry design that would fully meet health and safety standards required by the Inn. Access will therefore remain at ground level as it has been since the start of work, with the gate system and builder's banksman to ensure that it is safe for pedestrians to cross. There will be times when the gates are shut when site traffic is passing, but these will be kept to the shortest possible waiting time.
From the Trinity 2016 dining term onwards all dining term dinners and lectures will take place in the Old Hall for the duration of the development works.
This also means new arrangements are in place - please familiarise yourself with the details here
